Disappointment for ELO Fans
Last-Minute Cancellation of BST Hyde Park Festival
Fans of Jeff Lynne’s Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) were left disappointed after the band’s headlining act at the BST Hyde Park festival was cancelled at the last minute. The 77-year-old Jeff Lynne was forced to withdraw from the performance due to a "systemic infection", according to a statement released by ELO.
Reasons for Cancellation
The decision to cancel the performance comes just days after the band pulled out of a gig at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena for a similar reason. Last year, Lynne had hinted that the BST Hyde Park appearance could be ELO’s last performance, saying "it seems the perfect place to make our last show".
Health Concerns
Lynne was said to be "heartbroken" and is currently under the care of a team of doctors who have advised him that performing is "simply not possible" at this time. The band stated that "the legacy of the band and his long-term fans are in Jeff’s thoughts today – and although he is so sorry that he cannot appear, he knows that at this time he has to concentrate on his health and rehabilitation".
Refunds and Next Steps
Ticketholders will be reimbursed and contacted directly by their ticketing agent, according to BST. The cancellation is a disappointment for fans who were looking forward to singing along to ELO’s hits, including "Mr. Blue Sky", under the summer sky.
ELO’s History and Legacy
ELO was formed in Birmingham in 1970 by Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, and Bev Bevan. The band is known for merging musical genres, from classical to modern pop and rock, and incorporating a wide range of instruments into their songs. Their hits, including "Livin’ Thing", "Telephone Line", and "Evil Woman", have stood the test of time.
Recent Performances and Accolades
Despite the cancellation, ELO has been active in recent years, with Lynne bringing the band back together in 2014. They have performed at several concerts, including a comeback concert at BST Hyde Park in 2014, where they played some of their biggest hits with the BBC Concert Orchestra. ELO was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017, and Lynne received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015. He was also awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2020 for services to music.
