Introduction to the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

The 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) kicked off on Friday, July 4th, with a memorable opening ceremony. The event featured notable guests, including US actor Peter Sarsgaard, who received an honorary award. Sarsgaard took the stage to emphasize the importance of collective actions in overcoming divisions within the United States.

Sarsgaard’s Call to Action

Sarsgaard highlighted that a successful work environment is only possible with support. He drew parallels between the film industry and the current state of his country, stating that when the US withdraws from global responsibilities and tries to go it alone, it becomes divided from within. He emphasized that collective action is the only way to counteract these divisions, quoting former Czechoslovakian President Vaclav Havel, who said, "Half of a room cannot stay warm forever while the other half is cold."

Addressing Social Divisions

Luxembourgish-German actress Vicky Krieps, who also received a presidential award, echoed Sarsgaard’s sentiments. She stressed the importance of using films to spread messages of love, peace, and forgiveness. Both actors acknowledged the need for unity and collective action in the face of social divisions.

Tribute to Jiri Bartoska

The opening ceremony was largely dedicated to the late Festival President Jiri Bartoska, who passed away in May at the age of 78. Bartoska had been the president of the festival since its relaunch in 1994. The ceremony included a heartfelt tribute to his memory, with discussions underway to establish a permanent tribute to him in the city, such as naming a street or terrace after him.

New Trailer and Ceremony Highlights

The festival showcased its latest monochrome trailer, featuring celebrated Czech actor Bolek Polivka. The trailer ended with a poignant moment, revealing an empty chair for Bartoska. The ceremony also included a concert by British synth-pop singer La Roux and the first screening of an extended interview with Bartoska, shot in 2021.

Festival Program

The main program of the nine-day festival began on Saturday, July 5th, with the Crystal Globe Competition, featuring films such as "The Shining Life" from Portugal and "Out of Love" from France. The festival also included a special screening of Czech director Milos Forman’s "One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest," with producer Michael Douglas receiving an honorary award.
