Introduction to Happy Gilmore 2
Julie Bowen was surprised when Netflix asked her to return for the highly anticipated sequel "Happy Gilmore 2". In a recent interview, Bowen explained that she thought she would be replaced as a love interest for Adam Sandler’s title character by a younger actress.
Bowen’s Initial Thoughts
Bowen stated, "I didn’t think they would bring me back at all. I mean, who should I be? He has to have a younger woman in this ‘Happy Gilmore 2’." She played Virginia Venit, an employee for the Professional Golf Tour, in the original 1996 film. Her character served as a guide and love interest for Happy Gilmore, and she will reprise her role in the Netflix follow-up alongside original actors Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald.
Her Experience with the First Film
Bowen also shared that she wasn’t confident she would be cast in the first film. She thought the production would choose a "hot girl" for the role instead. However, after reading for the part, she was relieved to be cast. The directors were also relieved, commenting that some of the other actresses who auditioned were "aggressively sexy". Bowen joked, "I said, ‘Is that a bad thing?’".
New Additions to the Cast
The sequel will feature new performers, including Margaret Qualley, Eric André, Sunny Sandler, Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Eminem, and Travis Kelce. Although Bowen hasn’t seen the final cut, she mentioned that she has fewer scenes in "Happy Gilmore 2" than in the original.
Support from Adam Sandler
Despite having fewer scenes, Bowen’s co-star Adam Sandler was supportive and encouraged her not to downplay her role. He told her, "Stop saying that. You are the heart of the film." This vote of confidence meant a lot to Bowen, and she’s excited for fans to see the final product.
Release Date
"Happy Gilmore 2" is set to release on Netflix on July 25th. Fans of the original are eagerly awaiting the sequel, and with the return of Julie Bowen and other original cast members, it’s shaping up to be a hilarious and heartwarming film.
