Introduction to UK Film Productions

This summer, Great Britain has been a hub for various high-profile film and television productions. Some of the most notable ones include Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Amazon’s The Thomas Crown Affair, and Warner Bros’ Practical Magic 2. These productions are not only significant for the entertainment industry but also contribute to the local economy.

Marvel and Sony Productions

Tom Holland is set to return as Spider-Man for the fourth episode of the Marvel/Sony epic, which will begin filming in August at Pinewood Studios. There are also reports of location shooting in Glasgow. Marvel is already filming Avengers: Doomsday, Vision Quest, and series two of Star Wars: Ahsoka in Pinewood Studios for Disney+. Additionally, Sony is planning to start production on a four-film biopic of the Beatles, featuring Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan, and Joseph Quinn.

Warner Bros Productions

Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock will star in the sequel to Practical Magic, directed by Susanne Bier, for Warner Bros. The production will take place in the studio, where the Harry Potter series and House of the Dragon series three are also being filmed. Warner Bros has also been working on a JJ Abrams project since April, although the title has not been disclosed.

Other Film Productions

Production is set to begin in the UK for Focus Features’ Sension and Sensibility next month. Georgia Oakley will direct Daisy Edgar-Jones in the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel. There are also reports that Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey will film in some parts of the UK, including locations in Scotland, this summer. Nolan’s follow-up to Oppenheimer, also for Universal, has been in production for five months and has already filmed in Morocco, Greece, Italy, and LA.

For the Streamers

Amazon MGM Studios will start production on Michael B Jordan’s The Thomas Crown Affair in Elstree Studios next month. Jordan will star alongside Taylor Russell in the latest iteration of the romantic thriller story. The streamer is already filming Your Fault: London and the third series of The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power in Shepperton Studios.

Netflix has recently filmed Enola Holmes 3 and the feature film Heartstopper in Shepperton Studios. The production is preparing for its standard adaptation of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, starring Jack Lowden, Emma Corrin, and Olivia Colman. Greta Gerwig’s eagerly awaited Chronicles of Narnia feature is also in pre-production, although filming is likely to begin in the autumn.

AppleTV+ has several TV series in production, including the new crime thriller The Man You’re Looking For, starring Hugh Laurie, and will soon add series four of Ted Lasso to the list. Disney+ continues production on the second series of Rivals in Bristol and the six-part comedy Alice and Steve, as well as the Marvel series mentioned above.
