Introduction to the Galway Film Fleadh

The 37th edition of the Galway Film Fleadh is set to take place in Ireland from July 8th to 13th, featuring a wide range of films, including world premieres and award-winning movies. This year’s festival includes the horror film "The Morrigan" by Irish director Colum Eastwood and the documentary film "Calmly on the Set" by Mark Forbes.

Featured Films

"The Morrigan" follows an archaeologist who uncovers a mummified figure, unleashing an ancient evil on her team. The film features a talented cast, including Safran Burrows, James Cosmo, Toby Stephens, and Antonia Campbell-Hughes. "Calmly on the Set" explores the class department in the British film industry, featuring interviews with actors Maxine Peake and Vicky McClure, writer Paul Laverty, and filmmakers Sean McAllister and Kolton Lee.

Festival Highlights

The festival will open with Jim Sheridan and David Merriman’s "Recreation", starring Vicky Krieps, which is based on the true story of the unsolved murder of French filmmaker Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork. Mike Flanagan’s Toronto award-winning film "Chuck’s Life" will close the festival. Other notable films include Gabrielle Russell’s "The Billing of Erin Morrigan" and a documentary about Gerry Adams, "Gerry Adams: A Ballymurphy Man".

World Premieres

There are 31 feature films making their world premiere at the festival. Some of the other titles include Ruán Magan’s "Hut", about the discovery of a body in a rural village, and Lance Daly’s "Trading", about a talented young violin player. The festival will also feature a number of Irish-language world premieres, including "Hut" and "Trading".

World Cinema Competition

The World Cinema competition features a selection of international films, including Gabriel Mascaro’s Berlin Silver Bear winner "The Blue Path", Chun-Teng’s Taiwanese drama "Eel", and Mathijs Poppe’s Idfa premiere "The Jacket". The competition has a prize fund of €3,000.

Industry Events

The Galway Film Fleadh will also feature a number of industry events, including a masterclass with "The Apprentice" director Ali Abbasi and a keynote speech by US producer Christine Vachon.
