Introduction to Ruben Ostlund’s Latest Project

Ruben Ostlund has described the "hard shooting" of his latest film, The Entertainment System is Below, while working on a laptop on a Croatian island. The film features a star-studded cast, including Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Samantha Morton, Tobias Menzies, Daniel Bruhl, and Julie Delpy, alongside 150 extras who had to remain in the same place for continuity.

The Challenges of Filming

Ostlund explained that the shoot was challenging due to the large number of people in every shot and the need to return to the same set every day. The film takes place on a long-distance flight where the video screens are not working for most passengers. To overcome the challenge of shooting in a narrow aircraft space, Ostlund used a pre-programmable mechanical arm, which he referred to as a "robot," to maneuver the camera and operator.

Overcoming Technical Challenges

The "robot" was controlled via a PlayStation controller and could fit into tight spaces. Ostlund had previously used this technology but had significantly increased its use for this film. He worked closely with cameraman Fredrik Wenzel to program the kit, which helped them greatly. The film was shot over 70 days, from January to May, and Ostlund praised the technical and production team for their excellent work.

Editing and Post-Production

Ostlund is currently in post-production, editing the film from his laptop in an open room on a sunlit tower on the nearby island of Lopud. He finds that being in a unique and peaceful environment helps him focus on his work. Ostlund describes the Slano Film Days, where he is currently attending, as a "unique place" that benefits aspiring filmmakers from the region.

Slano Film Days

The Slano Film Days is an initiative of the Sarajevo Film Festival, and Ostlund believes it provides a great opportunity for students to approach and talk to industry professionals. This year, Ostlund gave a master class and held individual meetings with 14 regional talents. He praises the founder, Mirsad Purivatra, for achieving his goal of creating a non-competitive and friendly environment.

The Film’s Themes and Release

Ostlund hopes that The Entertainment System is Below will be his sixth or seventh feature to premiere on the Croisette. He aims to "cause the biggest stir in the history of the Cannes Film Festival" with a long scene where a young girl has to go without her family’s iPad for 15 minutes. The film’s release is highly anticipated, and the sales of the world rights have been acquired by A24.

The Future of Cinema

Ostlund also discussed the state of the film industry, particularly in Sweden. He believes that the state-funded system can be a problem, as it provides economic safety but can lead to a disconnection from the audience. Ostlund thinks that filmmakers should consider themselves "live acts" and strive to create events that can be sold to the audience. He hopes that the industry will continue to evolve and that initiatives like the Slano Film Days will help nurture new talent.
