Introduction to a Legendary Artist
The representation of a goods train by Surrey artist who leaves King’s Cross Station at night was elected to the public for third place. This painting was created by David Shepherd CBE, a renowned artist who passed away in 2017. His work was originally made in 1955 as a poster for British railways, showcasing his deep love for steam engines.
A Passion for Steam Engines
Mr. Shepherd’s painting became known for his love for steam engines and took third place in a global Railway 200 survey, which was two centuries of the modern railway. The granddaughter of the artist, Georgina Lamb, said: "Nothing made him happier than standing on board a roaring steam engine". His passion for steam engines was evident in his artwork, bringing his paintings to life and creating a lively homage to the art of crafts he spent his life perfecting.
A Legacy Beyond Railways
Mr. Shepherd had a second love that his legacy consolidated as an artist. It was his wildlife art and care for endangered species that prompted him in 1984 to create the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF). This foundation was a testament to his lifelong passion for wildlife conservation. Ms. Lamb, who is also the CEO of the foundation, said her grandfather had a "lifelong passion" for both topics that he had painted "with the same love and skill".
The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation
The DSWF, based in Shalford, works throughout Africa and Asia to end the crime of wild animals and to protect endangered species in their natural habitat. The foundation is a continuation of Mr. Shepherd’s legacy, carrying out his heir’s work in conservation. Georgina Lamb’s involvement in the foundation ensures that her grandfather’s passion for wildlife conservation continues to make a difference.
A Lasting Legacy
David Shepherd’s artwork and legacy continue to inspire people around the world. His love for steam engines and wildlife conservation has left a lasting impact on the art world and beyond. Through his foundation, his work will continue to protect endangered species and preserve the beauty of nature for future generations.
