Introduction to Kneecap

Kneecap, an Irish language hip-hop group, has been making headlines recently due to a controversy surrounding one of its members, Liam óg ó Hannaidh, also known as Mo Chara. The 27-year-old rapper appeared in a London court on charges related to terrorist activities.

The Court Appearance

Mo Chara was released on unconditional bail after his appearance at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The court hearing was attended by his band members, Bap (Naoise ó Cairláin) and DJ Próvaí (JJ ó Nachartaigh), who showed their support for their fellow musician. The group’s fans also gathered outside the court, holding posters and flags with slogans such as "Free Mo Chara" and "Defend Kneecap".

The Allegations

Mo Chara is accused of displaying a flag in support of the banned organization Hezbollah during a London appearance. The group has denied any wrongdoing, stating that they will "vigorously defend themselves" against the allegations. In a statement published on social media, Kneecap said, "We deny this ‘crime’ and will vehemently defend ourselves."

Support from Fans

The group’s fans have been showing their support for Mo Chara, with many gathering outside the court to protest his arrest. They held posters and flags with slogans such as "Free Mo Chara" and "Defend Kneecap", and some even displayed Palestinian flags with the inscription "Freedom of speech, free Palestine". The crowd also chanted slogans, including a spin on a well-known discriminatory sentence from the 1950s, "More Blacks, more dogs, more Irish, Mo Chara".

Who is Kneecap?

Kneecap is an Irish language hip-hop group that has been making waves in the music scene. The group consists of three members, Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, who perform under their artist names. They have won several awards, including a British Academy of Film Award (BAFTA) in February 2025. However, they have also faced criticism, particularly after displaying messages about the war in Gaza during their set at the US Music Festival Coachella in April.

Controversies and Court Cases

Kneecap has been involved in several controversies and court cases in the past. In November 2024, the group won a case against the British government over a decision made by then-minister Kemi Badenoch to withdraw an arts grant. The group has been known for their outspoken views and activism, which has sometimes landed them in trouble with authorities. Despite this, they remain a popular and influential force in the music scene, with a dedicated fan base and a commitment to using their platform to speak out on social issues.
