New Releases in Cinemas

Universal’s live-action remake of "How to Train Your Kite" is leading the new releases in cinemas in Great Britain and Ireland this weekend. The film is set to open on 670 sites after already taking £2.4 million from Monday (June 9). The family film hopes to match the opening weekends of the animated trilogy, with the first film opening to £4.8 million (including £2.1 million in previews) via Paramount in 2010.

Box Office Predictions

The latest "How to Train Your Kite" film, starring Mason Thames and Nico Parker, will compete against the live-action remake of "Lilo & Stitch", which has topped the box office for three weeks. This title, via Disney, opened to £8 million last month, while other new live-action remakes included "Snow White" (£3.9 million debut, March 2025) and "Mufasa: The Lion King" (£4.4m debut, 2024), also for Disney.

Film Details

Directed by Dean DeBlois, who also directed the original animated films, "How to Train Your Kite" focuses on a young Viking boy who befriends a kite. The cast also includes Gerard Butler, Nick Frost, and Julian Dennison.

Tornado Whirls In

Lionsgate is releasing survival thriller "Tornado" in 165 locations. The film, starring Jack Lowden, Tim Roth, and Takehiro Hira, is set in 1790s Great Britain and follows a Japanese woman who crosses paths with a gang of ruthless criminals who murdered her father.

Other New Releases

Lionsgate will also re-release the Oasis documentary "Overhaul" in 310 locations from Sunday (June 15). Hong Kong drama "The Way We Talk" is opening in 52 cinemas via Central City Media, while Metfilm Distribution is releasing British drama "Lollipop" in 29 locations. Icon Film Distribution is releasing musical "Julia & Romeo", which opened on Wednesday (June 11) and features cameos by Rebel Wilson and Jason Isaacs.

More New Films

Other new releases include documentary "Love & Anger: Munroe Bergdorf" via Cinematics (June 10); serial killer horror "Protein" via! Bulldog Film Distribution; and Indian action film "Datauan Da Munda 3" via Zee Studios.
