Introduction to Shakira’s Concerns

Shakira, the renowned Colombian singer, has expressed her deep concerns about the "constant fear" that immigrants face in the United States under President Donald Trump’s administration. In a recent interview with BBC News, Shakira shared her personal experiences and thoughts on the current state of immigration in the US.

Shakira’s Personal Experience

Shakira moved to Miami as a teenager to pursue her music career. She was only 19 years old at the time and, like many other Colombian immigrants, was seeking a better future. To learn English and improve her songwriting skills, she drew inspiration from famous poets and writers like Leonard Cohen, Walt Whitman, and Bob Dylan.

Rise to Fame

Over the years, Shakira has become an internationally acclaimed artist, scoring several top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her song "Hips Don’t Lie" has been a huge success, and she has also been recognized for her work at the Grammys. In fact, she dedicated her Grammy Award earlier this year to "all my brothers and sisters, immigrant or not, in this country," stating that "they are loved, they are worth it, and I will always fight with them."

The Challenges Facing the Latin Community

However, despite her success, Shakira acknowledges that this year has been challenging for the Latin community in the US. The Trump administration’s alleged violations of immigration policies have sparked protests and controversy. Recently, protests were held in Los Angeles against illegal ICE attacks, and the situation remains tense.

Living in Constant Fear

Shakira describes the experience of living in the US as an immigrant as "living in constant fear." She finds it painful to see the treatment of immigrants and believes that it is essential to stay united and raise their voices against injustice. According to her, a country can change its immigration policy, but the treatment of everyone must always be humane.

Protests and Controversy

In response to the protests in Los Angeles, Trump deployed the California National Guard to suppress the demonstrations. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom pushed back, formally requesting that the Trump administration "abolish its illegal use of troops in Los Angeles County and return them to my command." The case is currently ongoing in the courts, with the Court of Appeal temporarily blocking a federal judge’s order that would have allowed Trump to regain control over the National Guard forces.

A Call to Action

Shakira’s message is clear: immigrants deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. She urges everyone to come together and fight for justice, emphasizing that a country’s immigration policy should not dictate the way people are treated. As she continues to use her platform to raise awareness about the issues faced by immigrants, her voice serves as a reminder of the importance of humanity and compassion in the face of adversity.
