Doechii Speaks Out Against Immigration Raids
Doechii scored her first Bet laureate on Monday evening and used her platform to address the audience of award winners and participants at the Peacock Theater. She expressed her feelings of responsibility as an artist in light of the recent immigration protests and raids in Los Angeles.
A Call to Action
"I want to tackle what is going on in front of the building," Doechii said, referring to the protests in the city center of Los Angeles, the home of Peacock Theater. "These are ruthless attacks that create fear and chaos in our communities. In the name of law and order, Trump uses armed forces to stop a protest, and I want them to consider all of the government – if we exercise every time we exercise our democratic right to protest."
The Situation in Los Angeles
The troops of the California National Guard arrived in the city on Sunday, following a violent clash between immigration agents and demonstrators. This incident is part of an emerging struggle between California and the Trump government. The protests began on Friday, after officials from the immigration authority carried out raids at three locations in Los Angeles, resulting in dozens of people being taken into custody.
Doechii’s Message of Hope
Doechii stated that she would use her voice to advocate for "all oppressed people, for black, for Latino people, for trans people, for the people in Gaza." She continued: "What kind of government is it? People are torn and torn by their families? We all deserve to live in hope and not in fear. And I hope we stand together, my brothers and my sisters against hate and we protest against it."
Award and Recognition
Doechii won the award for the best female hip-hop artist, a category that also recognized Cardi B, Doja Cat, Glorilla, Latto, Megan Thee Hengst, Nicki Minaj, Rapsody, and Sexyy Red as nominees. Her powerful speech and message of hope resonated with the audience, solidifying her position as a prominent voice in the music industry.
