Introduction to The Highway Rat

The Highway Rat, a child animation based on Julia Donaldson’s picture book, has been reproduced in the Cornish language. Originally published in 2017 as a 25-minute BBC1 Christmas special, the film was a huge success. The Cornish version is a result of collaboration between Screen Cornwall and Magic Light Pictures, the creators of the film.

Bringing The Highway Rat to Life in Cornish

Director Edward Rowe, who also acted in the film, expressed his delight at the opportunity to bring the animation to life in the Cornish language. He stated that it was "really wonderful" that children could learn more about Kernewek through the animation. Rowe also praised the original English version, which features prominent actors such as David Tennant, Rob Brydon, and Nina Sosanya.

A Fun and Rewarding Experience

Rowe, who has also appeared in Netflix’s The Witcher and the BAFTA-designed feature film Bait, described working with the Cornish cast and crew as an "honor". He added that the experience was "really, really fun" and that he "really loved" the original English version of the film. The Cornish version offers a unique opportunity for Cornish-speaking children to engage with a high-quality animation in their native language.

The Importance of Cornish Language Content

Laura Giles from Screen Cornwall emphasized the significance of creating content in the Cornish language. She stated that "it is really important to see content that you know and love in Kernewek". Giles also expressed her pleasure at bringing Cornish acting and language talent into the animation, highlighting the importance of promoting the Cornish language and culture.

Conclusion

The reproduction of The Highway Rat in the Cornish language is a significant achievement, offering Cornish-speaking children the opportunity to engage with a beloved animation in their native language. The collaboration between Screen Cornwall and Magic Light Pictures has resulted in a high-quality production that showcases Cornish talent and promotes the Cornish language and culture.
