Introduction to Jonathan Daviss’ New Role
Jonathan Daviss, known for his leading role as Pope in the hit Netflix series "Outer Banks," is set to leave the show as it concludes with its fifth and final season. The actor has now been cast in the upcoming biopic about the legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, produced by Universal.
The Snoop Dogg Biopic
The biopic, described as a "definitive" film about the entertainment mogul and icon, is being produced by Snoop Dogg himself, alongside Brian Grazer and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker. The film will be directed by Craig Brewer, known for his work on "Hustle and Flow" and "Dolemite is My Name," and will feature a script written by Joe Robert Cole, co-author of the "Black Panther" films.
Jonathan Daviss’ Career
Daviss has also appeared in other notable projects, including the youthful black comedy "Do Revenge" alongside Maya Hawke, Camila Mendes, Sophie Turner, and Austin Abrams. His filmography also includes films such as "Age of Summer" and "Edge of the World." Born in Houston, Texas, Daviss currently resides in Los Angeles and is represented by Monster Talent, Innovative Artists, and Skrzyniarz & Mallean.
The Making of the Biopic
The Snoop Dogg biopic was first announced in 2022, when Universal Chief Donna Langley acquired the rights to the rapper’s life and music. Langley stated that Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture, and that the film will be a "permanent document" of his unique story.
Universal’s History with Musical Biopics
The film follows in the footsteps of other successful musical biopics from Universal, including "8 Mile" and "Straight Outta Compton." The latter, which told the story of the rise of the seminal rap group NWA, earned over $200 million at the box office and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Snoop Dogg was featured in the film, played by Lakeith Stanfield.
Production Team
The Snoop Dogg biopic will be overseen by Senior VP of Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Development Tony Ducret for the studio. The film is the first project under Death Row Pictures’ overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios.
