New Movie Acquisition
1-2 Special announced on Thursday that it had acquired another premiere from Cannes, obtaining all North American rights to Simón Mesa Soto’s film, A Poet. This movie is a winner of the UN Certain Regard Jury Prize.
Movie Plot
The young distributor plans to release the film in theaters, which tells the story of a failed writer who tries to promote a young poet and learns to live in the process. The movie features a cast including Ubeimar Rios, Rebeca Andrade, Guillermo Cardona, Allison Correa, Margarita Soto, and Humberto Restrepo. The film was shot in Medellín, Colombia, with a lineup that mostly consists of non-professional actors.
Filmmaker’s Background
Soto, along with Juan Sarmiento G. and Manuel Ruiz Montastrre, served as producers for the film. The filmmaker’s first feature, Protection, premiered at the 2021 Cannes Critics’ Week and won seven awards at the 2022 Macondo Awards of the Colombian Film Academy, including Best Director and Best Film. His short film, You Allow, won the 2014 Cannes Palme d’Or.
Acquisition Details
1-2 Special negotiated the deal with Luxbox on behalf of the filmmakers. This acquisition is not the only recent purchase by 1-2 Special, as the company announced earlier in the week that it had acquired the fourteenth selection of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, SPIEGEL No. 3.
