Introduction to Billy Joel’s Documentary
Billy Joel had planned to attend the opening evening of the Tribeca Festival to witness the world premiere of a new documentary about his rise to fame. However, due to his recent diagnosis with a brain disorder known as normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), he was unable to attend the screening of "Billy Joel: One Night Only" on Wednesday.
The Documentary Premiere
The directors of the film, Susan Lacy and Jessica Levin, assured the audience that Joel is confident he will return to the stage. Lacy shared a message from the music legend, saying "He will be back." Joel also sent a note that read, "Old shit, but it is still preferable to being cremated."
Billy Joel’s Health Issues
After going public with his health problems, Joel recently announced that he had canceled 17 shows in stadiums across North America and England while he undergoes "intensive physical therapy." This decision was made to ensure his health and well-being, and his team is optimistic about his recovery.
The Documentary: A Look into Billy Joel’s Life
"Billy Joel: One Night Only" features archives, photos, and interviews with Joel and other members of his social and artistic circles, including Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Pink, Garth Brooks, and Elizabeth Weber, Joel’s ex-wife and former manager. The film explores the background story behind some of Joel’s most iconic songs, such as "Piano Man," "New York State of Mind," and "Just the Way You Are."
The Filmmaking Process
Lacy said Joel instructed the filmmakers to "be honest" when telling his story. She praised Joel for being courageous, humorous, and vulnerable throughout the filmmaking process. The documentary aims to showcase Joel’s music and life, highlighting his ability to connect with people from different generations and geographical locations.
Tribeca Festival and the Premiere
The co-founders of Tribeca, Robert de Niro and Jane Rosenthal, introduced the film, with de Niro describing Joel as a "poet laureate of New York." The premiere took place at the Beacon Theater, followed by a party at the Tavern on the Green, and was attended by A-listers like Tom Hanks and Whoopi Goldberg.
What’s Next for the Documentary
After its Tribeca screening, "Billy Joel: One Night Only" will debut on HBO and stream on Max this summer. The festival only showed the first part of the two-part documentary, with the second part to be released at a later date. The filmmakers decided to split the documentary into two parts, as the full version would have exceeded two and a half hours.
