Paramount’s "Mission: Impossible – The Final Billing" rose to the top, earning RMB 25.6 million (approximately $3.7 million USD) according to Artisan Gateway. The film’s impressive performance can be attributed to its high-octane action sequences and IMAX screenings.
IMAX Screening Success
The IMAX screening of "Mission: Impossible – The Final Billing" accounted for $4.9 million of the film’s total earnings in China. This achievement marks the highest IMAX opening weekend for a Hollywood title in China in 2025. Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, expressed his enthusiasm for the results, stating that they are a positive sign for upcoming Hollywood releases.
Top Performers
The top five spots in the China box office were filled by a mix of international and domestic films. In second place, the Chinese animated film "Endless Journey of Love" earned $7.6 million. Directed by Zhou Tienan and Yu Ao, the film follows a village girl who gains the power to control time and must navigate the dangers that come with it.
Other Notable Releases
The latest installment of the Japanese franchise "Doraemon: Nobitas Art World Tales" opened in third place, earning $7.5 million. Disney’s live-action adaptation of "Lilo & Stitch" came in fourth, earning $6.6 million on its second weekend and bringing its cumulative total to $17.8 million. The Hong Kong action thriller "Behind the Shadow" rounded out the top five, earning $4.3 million.
Market Trends
The total box office turnover for the weekend reached $58.2 million, a significant decline compared to the previous week. Despite this, China’s total box office revenue for the year now stands at $3.82 billion, representing a 26.6% increase compared to the same period last year. As the summer season approaches, it will be interesting to see how the China box office continues to evolve and which films will rise to the top.
