Introduction to a Young Music Prodigy

A student from Devon will compete at the North Devon Sinfonia for a one-off concert at the end of June. River, an 11-year-old student at West Buckland School in Barnstaple, has been playing the piano since he was six. His grandmother noticed his talent when he would hum film music, whistle, and sing, and she thought he would be interested in the piano.

Discovering His Passion

River started playing the piano at a young age and found that he progressed very quickly. "She thought I would be interested in the piano. I said yes and when I started, I found that I had progressed very quickly," said River. He will perform Mozart’s piano concert No. 21 on June 21 in Torrington’s St. Michael and All Angels Church.

The Music Behind the Notes

The student added: "When I play, I think about stories. With Rachmaninoff, it is like a great adventure history in which people have to sacrifice a little. In my thoughts, it is like pictures, stories, many different colors all of these things." River’s unique approach to music sets him apart from other young musicians.

A Remarkable Talent

His music teacher Dom Carter said that River’s talent was beyond everything he has ever seen for his age. "I have been teaching for 16 years and have never met a pianist of these skills at this age," he said. "It is remarkable. River works on pieces of seventh grade and eight at the age of eleven. He is so focused that he just shot his grades. Not that it is about grades for him, he just loves to play."

A Surprise to His Family

River’s mother, Laura, said that neither she nor her husband were musical and her son’s talent was a surprise. She said: "It lets her skin go explosive when you hear him play because he has such a musicality that gives emotions to what he plays. We are just very happy and love to hear him." River’s family is supportive of his musical endeavors and encourages him to continue pursuing his passion.

Upcoming Performance

River’s upcoming performance with the North Devon Sinfonia is a testament to his hard work and dedication to music. His unique talent and passion for music make him a standout young musician, and his future in the music world is bright.
