Introduction to the Shanghai International Film Festival
The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) has announced the titles that will be participating in its 27th edition, including the latest works of Cao Baoping, Arym Arym Kubat, and Antonio Ferreira. These films are among the 49 titles competing for the Golden Goblet Awards, which include 12 films from the main competition and the Asian new talent competition, most of which are world premieres.
Competition Titles
A trio of Chinese films will be competing in the main competition, including Cao Baoping’s Tianjin-set crime comedy drama "A Crazy Summer"; Qiu Sheng’s China-France co-production "My Father’s Son"; and Wang Tong’s feature debut "Wild Nights, Tame Animals". All except one of the main competition titles are world premieres, which also include Arym Arym Kubat’s "Black Red Yellow" from Kyrgyzstan, Miriam Heard’s Chile-UK-France co-production "After the Fog", and Antonio Ferreira’s Portugal-Brazil co-production "The Scent of Things Remembered".
Asian New Talent Competition
The Asian new talent competition features 12 feature debuts from the region, including films from China, Japan, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Iran, India, and the Philippines. The competition includes nine premieres, with five from China: Bian Zhuo’s "As Water Flows", Cheng Liang’s "Odd’s Racket", Qiu Yujie’s "Seven Days", Shi Renfei’s "The Last Summer", and Catch Liang’s "Water Can Go Everywhere". Japanese director Yuiga Danzuka’s "Brand New Landscape" will also make its Asian premiere after its recent debut at Cannes.
Other Categories and Awards
In addition to the main competition and Asian new talent competition, the Golden Goblet Awards also include categories for documentaries and animations, with five entries each, as well as 15 short films. The awards have set a new submission record, with over 2,800 entries received in the five competition sections, with a notable increase in submissions from America and Africa. The International Jury Board consists of 21 members from Asia, Africa, America, and Europe, with Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore serving as the jury president of the main competition.
SIFF and the Chinese Film Industry
SIFF has long served as a springboard for Chinese-speaking cinema and emerging talents across Asia. This year, around 60 Chinese films will be showcased under the theme of "Asian, Chinese Film, and New Talents", including competitive entries, premieres, and restored classics. For the first time, the SIFF film market will be merged with the Shanghai TV Festival market to form a comprehensive international film and television market.
Festival Details
The 27th edition of SIFF will take place from June 13th to 22nd, followed by the Shanghai TV Festival from June 23 to 27. The festival will open with the first part of "She Has No Name", directed by Peter Chan and starring Zhang Ziyi. The crime thriller, which premiered at Cannes last year, will be divided into two parts for release.
