Mike Sumler, the energetic hype man of the Grammy Award-winning group Kool & The Gang, has passed away at the age of 71. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Sumler died in a car accident over Memorial Day weekend.
A Career Spanning Decades
Sumler’s journey with Kool & The Gang began in 1985 when he performed with his own band, Power Pac. In an interview with the Kelly talk show in 2018, Sumler recalled meeting the group and how one of their security team members discovered him performing in a Chicago club. This chance encounter led to a lasting friendship and eventually, a role with the group.
From Stylist to Hype Man
Initially, Sumler worked as a stylist and choreographer for Kool & The Gang, ensuring the band looked their best on stage. However, his talents soon became apparent, and he was invited to join the group as their hype man. Sumler’s energy and dance moves quickly won over audiences, and he became an integral part of the group’s performances. He also provided background vocals for their music, including the hit song "Get Down On It."
