Introduction to a New Documentary
A documentary about tension spotting, featuring author Irvine Welsh, is set to premiere as the closing night film of the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF), which takes place from August 14th to August 20th.
The Documentary’s Concept
Directed by Paul SNG, the feature finds Welsh at a crossroads, having achieved significant successes with several film adaptations of his books, which have sold 6 million copies worldwide. With his hedonistic days behind him, the renowned author embarked on a journey that "researched the limits of consciousness through a hallucinogenic journey".
Documentary Features
The documentary combines intimate observation material, rare archive film clips, and readings of his novels by actors Liam Neeson, Maxine Peak, Ruth Negga, and Stephen Graham, as well as musician Nick Cave.
The Filmmaker and Production
The filmmaker, Paul SNG, based in Edinburgh, is known for documentaries such as "Poly Styrene: I’m a Cliché", which won two BIFAs in 2021, and "Table", which premiered at Sheffield Docfest in 2023. The documentary is produced with the support of Screen Scotland by the production company LS Films, with Sarah Drummond, Managing Director of LS Films, as the producer.
Release and Festival Details
The publication in the UK is handled by Kaleidoscope. The 78th EIFF edition will open with Eva Victor’s comedy-drama "Sorry, Baby", and the full program will be announced on July 2.
