Record-Breaking Weekend at the Box Office
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch and Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Last Billing have kicked off the summer blockbuster season with a bang, securing the top two spots with an estimated $183 million and $77 million, respectively.
A Strong Start to the Summer Season
The dynamic duo earned $145 million and $63 million over three days, with the total three-day Friday to Sunday weekend generating $262 million and pushing the North American box office to over $3 billion for the year. This is a significant increase from the previous record of $314 million set in 2013.
Box Office Milestones
Lilo & Stitch has achieved several box office milestones, including the second-largest North American debut of the year, the second-largest four-day holiday weekend debut, and the third-largest debut of a Disney live-action release. The film has already exceeded the lifetime gross of the original animated Lilo & Stitch and has earned $341.7 million globally.
A Promising Summer Season
The summer season is expected to bring in $4.2 billion, an improvement from the $3.7 billion earned in 2024. This would be only the second time since the pandemic that the box office would cross $4 billion. Disney is the first studio to exceed $2 billion at the global box office in 2025, with a current total of $2.1 billion.
Mission: Impossible – The Last Billing
Tom Cruise’s latest film, Mission: Impossible – The Last Billing, has set a new record for the 29-year-old franchise, with a promising start to its run. The film has earned $63 million over three days and is expected to overtake the global gross of the previous installment. However, with a reported budget of $400 million, the film will need to perform well to reach the profit threshold.
Other Box Office Performers
New Line/Warner Bros’ Final Goal: Blood Lines took third place in its second weekend, earning $89.8 million. Disney/Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts and Warner Bros’ Sinner rounded out the top 5, with $171.4 million and $256.6 million, respectively. Warner Bros’ A Minecraft Film took eighth place, collecting $420 million after eight weekends.
