EU Takes Action Against Shein
The European Union (EU) has taken action against the Chinese fast-fashion website Shein, citing various breaches of EU consumer law. According to the EU, Shein’s practices, including fake discounts, misleading product labels, and hidden contact details, are in violation of EU regulations.
Breaches of EU Consumer Law
The EU’s investigation found a range of practices that are against EU law, including:
- Misleading information about products
- Deceptive product labels
- Misleading sustainability claims
- Hidden contact details
- Fake price reductions and deadlines to pressure consumers into buying
EU Demands Compliance
The EU has given Shein a month to respond to the findings and to bring its practices into line with EU consumer standards. "It is now for Shein to respect the rules and to fully align their practices with EU consumer standards," said Michael McGrath, EU Justice Commissioner. The EU has warned that if Shein fails to comply, it may face fines.
Shein’s Response
A Shein spokesperson said that the company’s priority is to ensure that European consumers have a safe, reliable, and pleasant online shopping experience. Shein has stated that it is working constructively with national consumer authorities and the EU Commission to demonstrate its commitment to compliance with EU laws and regulations.
Previous Controversies
Shein has been under fire in the past for its business practices. In January, a BBC report found that some employees were working 75-hour weeks, in violation of Chinese labor laws. Shein was also accused of "murder ignorance" by UK MPs after its lawyer refused to answer questions about the source of its cotton.
Commitment to Change
In response to the BBC investigation, Shein said that it is committed to ensuring the fair and decent treatment of all employees in its supply chain. The company has invested $10 million in strengthening governance and compliance and has stated that it strives to maintain the highest payment standards, demanding that all supply chain partners adhere to its code of conduct.
