Ethan Coen’s Latest Film Premiere

Ethan Coen’s slippery detective film, "Honey Don’t!", premiered at the Cannes festival on Friday at midnight. The film features a star-studded cast, including Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza, and Chris Evans. The movie received a six-minute standing ovation, with writer Tricia Cooke exclaiming, "All the time more queer cinema!"

A Grand Premiere

The film’s premiere was a grand affair, with the cast and crew receiving a loud cheer as they entered the theater. The audience applauded for every producer and distributor before the film started, showing their enthusiasm for the movie. In fact, the 90-minute film started almost 12:30 p.m. after entering the palace, but the audience didn’t seem to mind.

A Show of Support

The audience was particularly supportive of Aubrey Plaza, who was attending her first red carpet event since the death of her husband Jeff Baena in January. An audience member even shouted, "I love you, Aubrey!" to show their support. Qualley’s husband, music producer Jack Antonoff, was also present and encouraged the crowd to clap louder as she giggled during the ovation.

The Film’s Music

When the credits rolled, it was revealed that Antonoff and Coen had worked together on three songs for the film, one of which featured Lana Del Rey. The music added to the film’s unique and quirky atmosphere, which was evident from the start.

The Plot

The film follows the story of private detective Honey O’Donahue, played by Margaret Qualley, as she deals with a series of strange deaths connected to a mysterious church. Chris Evans gives a comedic performance as a charming but evil minister, while Aubrey Plaza plays a policeman who has a passionate love relationship with Honey. The film also features Charlie Day and Billy Eichner in supporting roles.

A Second Collaboration

"Honey Don’t!" marks the second collaboration between Coen and Qualley, who previously worked together on the road trip crime comedy "Drive-Ava Dolls". Both films see Coen taking on the role of director without his brother Joel, and the screenplays were written by Ethan and his wife Tricia Cooke.

Qualley’s Instincts

Qualley had said in an interview before Cannes that she had to follow her instincts to play Honey, describing the character as a "natural Scooby-Doo". Her instincts seem to have paid off, as the film received a warm reception at the premiere.

Release Date

"Honey Don’t!" has already secured distribution with Focus Features and is set to open in US cinemas on August 22nd. With its unique blend of mystery, comedy, and quirky characters, the film is sure to generate buzz in the coming months.
