Introduction to Ewan McGregor’s New Adventure
Ewan McGregor is no stranger to iconic films, from Star Wars to Trainspotting. However, his antics on the small screen have also stood the test of time. It’s been 20 years since the Perthshire actor first embarked on a road trip with his best buddy Charley Boorman. Since their unforgettable journey to New York, the duo has traveled to dozens of countries, going the long way up and down.
The Long Way Home
Now, on Apple TV+, the two men are taking the long way home. This time, it’s personal. "We’re going from my house to Charley’s house in England," McGregor told BBC Scotland News. This may seem like a simple journey, but it takes them through 15 European countries. According to Boorman, McGregor gets a foggy look in most of them and exclaims, "It looks like a little Scotland."
A Lifelong Friendship
The reason the series works is the lifelong friendship between the two that plays out on screen. Boorman can’t believe he gets to continue having adventures with his friend. "When you see him in front of me or in the mirror, it’s a real joy to know that we’re doing something we have a real passion and love for. Doing it with your best buddy is a nice feeling."
An Incredible Journey
McGregor adds, "This trip was incredible. I saw the first two episodes and thought I would like to do it again. It was a wonderful experience. For all the other trips, we had large distances for days and days where the landscape never changed. But this, we had different countries every few days, we met people and saw regional sports." In Holland, they saw a pole vault over canals, and then they saw snowmobiles over water.
A Personal Touch
One of the highlights was McGregor’s farewell from his house in Perthshire. McGregor, his father, and uncle are all former members of the Morrison’s Academy Pipe Band, which played the bikers off. "It meant a lot to get my father and the band out," said McGregor. In the program, he said, "Massive band, was it? It was like nine of us in the band I was in. I used to be a side drummer in this band. My father in front of me and my uncle. I come from a long line of drummers."
Returning Home
McGregor is emotionally home to return. "It’s home, and it will always have this unique feeling for me." Now that he has a new house there, he wants to do more in Scotland. "I’ll never have the feeling that I’ve seen enough of Scotland. I love being there so much. There are entire parts of it I’ve never been to. I’ve done some of the islands, but by no means all – Orkney and Shetland, I’ve never been. There are many places I would like to explore."
