Introduction to the Locarno Film Festival
The Locarno Film Festival, taking place from August 6 to August 16, has announced that renowned Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh will act as the President of the jury for the International competition. This prestigious role underscores Panh’s significant contributions to the world of cinema, particularly in his explorations of Cambodian history during and after the Khmer Rouge dictatorship.
Rithy Panh: A Brief Overview
Panh’s work has been recognized globally for its powerful portrayal of historical events. His latest film, "Meeting with Pol Pot," featuring Irene Jacob and Grégoire Colin, garnered attention at Cannes last year. His first feature documentary, "Site 2," released in 1989, won an award at the Amiens festival for its depiction of life in a refugee camp on the Cambodian border. Additionally, "The Missing Picture" secured the main prize at Cannes in 2013 and an Oscar nomination, while "Everything Will Be Fine" competed in the Berlinale in 2022 and won a Silver Bear.
The Role of the Jury
The international competitive jury, chaired by Panh, will award the Pardo d’Oro – The Golden Leopard on the last day of the festival, August 16. This award is a highlight of the festival, recognizing excellence in filmmaking.

Nazzaro highlights Panh’s real engagement and his ability to move freely between numerous forms of today’s filmmaking as decisive elements in offering him the role of President of the Jury at the 78th Locarno Film Festival.
