Introduction to Hafsia Herzi
The director Hafsia Herzi, in a recent Cannes Close-Up interview, spoke about her first experience in the Cannes competition as a filmmaker with her movie, The Little Sister, an adaptation of the autobiographical novel by Fatima Daas, The Last.
The Story Behind The Little Sister
The Little Sister tells the story of a young lesbian Muslim woman living in the Paris suburbs. Herzi was drawn to the book because she had never seen such a character on the big screen before. The film features newcomer Nadia Melliti in the lead role. Herzi’s decision to make the film was motivated by the lack of representation of characters like the protagonist in mainstream cinema.
Herzi’s Experience at Cannes
In the interview, Herzi shared her thoughts on the "surprises" that Cannes always brings, including encounters with celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson. She also talked about her first-time experience walking the red carpet. Herzi is part of a new generation of filmmakers who have made it into the official selection this year.
Herzi’s Background and Career
Herzi initially gained recognition as an actress in Abdellatif Kechiche’s Couscous, for which she won the Most Promising Actress César Award in 2008. She has since transitioned into filmmaking, with You Will Be Mine premiering at Critics’ Week in 2019, followed by Good Mother in 2021.
Production and Distribution of The Little Sister
The Little Sister is sold by MK2 films and produced by Julie Billy and Naomi Denamur by June in co-production with Arte France Cinéma and Vanessa Ciszewski from the German Catholic Studio.
