The End of an Era: Zak Starkey Leaves The Who

The Who’s long-time drummer, Zak Starkey, has been let go from the band for the second time, and it seems this time it’s final. The news was first announced by guitarist Pete Townshend on social media and later confirmed by Starkey himself.

A Sudden Departure

Starkey revealed that he was asked to say that he had quit, but he claims that would be a lie. He wrote, "I love the band and would never have left." Townshend broke the news on Instagram, stating that "the time has come to change" and that Starkey has many new projects in the works. He also wished Starkey all the best.

A New Drummer Joins The Who

Townshend also announced that Scott Devours, who has worked with Roger Daltrey’s solo band, will join The Who for their farewell tour. Starkey responded to the news, saying he was fired and asked to give an explanation two weeks after being reinstated. He claims that he was let go from the band again, just two weeks after being brought back.

A Month of Drama

It’s been a month since Starkey was first announced to be leaving the band, only to be quickly reinstated. Previously, Starkey had been let go after a show at the Royal Albert Hall in London, where singer Roger Daltrey was visibly unhappy. The news of Starkey’s initial departure was met with surprise and sadness from fans.

A History with The Who

Starkey has been The Who’s drummer for over 20 years, joining the band in 1996 for their "Quadrophenia" revival tour. He is the son of Ringo Starr, the legendary drummer of The Beatles. Starkey’s departure marks the end of a 30-year relationship with The Who, specifically with Townshend and Daltrey.

Fan Reaction

Fans have been reacting to the news on social media, with some expressing sadness and others welcoming the new drummer, Scott Devours. Some fans have even joked that Starkey could join the Foo Fighters, who recently fired their drummer, Josh Freese. The reactions have been mixed, with some fans feeling that The Who won’t be the same without Starkey.

A New Chapter for The Who

As The Who embarks on their farewell tour with a new drummer, fans are left to wonder what the future holds for the band. With Starkey’s departure, a new chapter begins for The Who, and only time will tell what’s in store for this legendary rock band.
