Introduction to the Incident

Rapper Tory Lanez was hospitalized after being stabbed in a California prison, according to state corrections officials. The Canadian hip-hop artist was attacked on Tuesday morning by another inmate in a residential unit of the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, about 120 km north of Los Angeles.

The Attack and Response

The prison staff responded to the incident, activated 911, and provided medical assistance before the 31-year-old Lanez was taken to a local medical facility for further treatment. No information was provided about Lanez’s condition, but media reports indicate that his injuries were not life-threatening.

Background on Lanez’s Incarceration

Lanez, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, is serving a 10-year prison sentence for the shooting of musician Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. He was convicted of three felony charges in 2023, including assault with a semi-automatic firearm. The case sparked controversy in the hip-hop world, with some rappers, including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, weighing in on the conflict.

The 2020 Shooting Incident

Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, when she was leaving a pool party in reality star Kylie Jenner’s Hollywood hills. The couple had argued in a vehicle about their earlier sexual relationship and insulted each other about their careers, Megan Thee Stallion said during the trial. She asked to be let out of the vehicle, at which point Lanez began shooting at the ground and yelled at her to "dance." She required surgery to remove bullet fragments from her foot.

Lanez’s Denial and Conviction

Lanez refused to apologize and maintained his innocence in the shooting. Despite his denial, he was found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The conviction came after a highly publicized trial, with many in the music industry calling for Lanez to be held accountable for his actions.

Lanez’s Music Career

Before his conviction, Lanez had released seven US top-10 albums in seven years. He has also announced the upcoming release of a new album, titled "Peterson," which he is working on from prison. Despite his current incarceration, Lanez remains a notable figure in the hip-hop world, with a dedicated fan base and a legacy that continues to be felt.
