Introduction to Dracula
The Luxbox, based in Paris, has taken on Radu Jude’s Dracula and will start sales for the Romanian writer-director’s vampire tale in Cannes. The comedy-drama, currently in post-production, was shot in Transylvania, where the original myth was created, and combines several twists against Dracula’s history.
The Making of Dracula
According to Jude, "The film is shot with a lot of joy – a joy in the cinema and the storytelling – and despite the fact that our world is full of vampires, I hope that this joy will be felt and shared by those who will see the film. Make Dracula great again!" He described Dracula as "a film about the cinema itself, with its limits, its history, and its myths."
A Unique Perspective on Dracula
Jude’s Dracula will look at the legend of Dracula through various angles, including "The Absurd (in homage to the historical avant-garde), Pulp (in homage to JLGS Alphaville (Buñuel)), politically (Romero), theater (Brecht), exaggerated (Lucian Pintilie), and cheeky." This unique approach promises to bring a fresh perspective to the classic tale.
Production and Distribution
Dracula is produced by Romania’s Saga Film, Witcraft Nabis Film, Luxembourg’s The Raisa Film, and Romania’s microfilm. Jude has previously worked with Luxbox on Continental ’25, which premiered in February in the competition in Berlin and won the Silver Bear for the best script.
Radu Jude’s Background
Jude won Berlin’s Golden Bear in 2021 for Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn and the Silver Bear for the best director in 2015 for Aferim. His most recent film, Don’t Expect Too Much from the End of the World, debuted at the Locarno Film Festival in 2023. With his impressive track record, Jude’s Dracula is highly anticipated in the film industry.
