Introduction to Newcastle Pride 2025
Three artists have been selected to exhibit their work during the Pride Festival in a city. The sculptor Lady Kitt, fashion designer Christopher Niari, and Sam Barley will have their work presented during the Newcastle Pride 2025 and the city’s first Pride Fringe festival. Each commission received a development scholarship of £2,500 and was selected from local artists after a call to create work on the subject of being "unapologetically visible".
The Meaning Behind the Art
Lady Kitt said the topic meant "the support of remaining resources, nursing, and the community in the current climate". They plan to use the financing to host workshops for locals, exploring how to remain "unapologetically visible" in troubled times. This will allow participants to exchange ideas that will be woven together to create an installation that offers a space for calm, connection, and contemplation at the Newcastle Pride celebration.
Reducing Stress for Marginalized Communities
Lady Kitt also stated that the scholarship would enable them to continue their research on how art can reduce stress for marginalized communities. This is a crucial aspect of their work, as they aim to provide a sense of comfort and solace for those who need it most.
Custom Pieces for Drag Artists
Christopher Niari and Sam Barley are known for creating bold, individual pieces for drag artists. They plan to use the money to create new designs that will be showcased at the Pride Fringe Festival. "We really hope that we can put the talent in the spotlight in the fashion and design community in northeastern England and really work towards queer excellence that goes deep through," said Niari.
Partnership and Opportunities
The commissions were organized in partnership with Creative Central NCL and Curious Arts by Northern Pride. In addition to the two fully funded projects, three artists have received research and development funding to develop their own work. These were awarded to poet Amy Langdown, singer-songwriter Malik Abdul, and filmmaker EJ Raymond.
