Introduction to the Controversy

The Summerstage concert in Central Park, which was supposed to feature singer Kehlani, has been canceled due to security concerns. This decision came after the mayor’s office, led by Eric Adams, expressed concerns about the singer’s pro-Palestine stance. Kehlani has been vocal in her support for Palestine, which has led to controversy and backlash from some groups.

The Reason Behind the Cancellation

In a letter to the City Parks Foundation Executive Director Heather Lubov, New York’s first deputy mayor Randy Mastro stated that the city has security concerns regarding Kehlani’s planned performance. This concern was partly due to the controversy surrounding her show at Cornell University, which was also canceled. Mastro suggested that Kehlani’s show could endanger the other Summerstage events in the park.

The City’s Stance on the Matter

Mastro’s letter implied that if the foundation did not take immediate measures to ensure public safety, the city would reserve all rights and appeals regarding the foundation’s license. In response, Lubov confirmed that the event was canceled. Summerstage released a statement emphasizing the importance of artistic expression but prioritizing the safety of guests and artists.

Kehlani’s Past Support for Palestine

Kehlani has been open about her support for Palestine, particularly in her music video for the song "Next 2 U." The video featured her dancing and singing in front of a Palestinian flag and included a message honoring the names of thousands of deceased children who died in Gaza. The video’s opening message, "Long Live the Intifada," has been called anti-Semitic by groups like the American Jewish Committee.

Kehlani’s Response to the Backlash

After the Cornell show was canceled, Kehlani posted a video on Instagram stating that she is neither anti-Semitic nor against Jews. She emphasized that she is anti-genocide and against the actions of the Israeli government. Following the cancellation of the Central Park show, Kehlani took to Instagram again, writing that she remains focused on her purpose, mission, and art.

The Aftermath

The cancellation of Kehlani’s Summerstage concert has sparked a debate about artistic expression, safety, and politics. While some have criticized the city’s decision, others have applauded the move, citing concerns about public safety. Kehlani, meanwhile, has remained committed to her art and her mission, despite the controversy surrounding her.
