Introduction to the Festival

The Swindon Festival of Literature is back for its 32nd year, running for seven days from Monday to Sunday. This festival is not just about literature; it also encompasses performance and art, offering a wide range of events including readings and open-air festival-style performances. Despite the challenges posed by Covid-19, which led to a virtual festival in 2020, the event has continued to thrive.

History and Evolution

The festival has been running since 1994 and has grown to include a diverse lineup of events and performers. This year’s festival promises to be just as exciting, with notable figures such as Professor Richard Dawkins, poet George Szirtes, and impressionist Alistair McGowan scheduled to appear. The festival’s ability to attract big names is a testament to its enduring popularity and appeal.

Events and Performances

A total of 31 events are planned for the week, some of which are free, while others require an entry fee. The first event, the Dawn Chorus, takes place on Monday at 5:30 a.m. in Lawn Woods near the old town. This free event features poems, dance, and music and is expected to last over an hour. According to the festival’s founder, Matt Holland, the Dawn Chorus brings together a wide variety of people, making it one of the most diverse events of the festival.

Notable Guests and Performers

The festival boasts an impressive lineup of guests and performers. On Wednesday, evolutionary biologist Professor Richard Dawkins and King’s Gold Medal for Poetry winner George Szirtes will make appearances. Comedian Ivo Graham and impressionist Alistair McGowan will take the stage on Friday. With 26 other events scheduled throughout the week, there is something for everyone at the festival.

Conclusion

As Matt Holland, the founder of the festival, said, "I defy anyone not to find something they like among the events." With its rich history, diverse lineup, and commitment to showcasing literature, performance, and art, the Swindon Festival of Literature is an event not to be missed. Whether you’re interested in poetry, comedy, or music, there’s something for everyone at this exciting seven-day festival.
