Toyota Recall

Introduction to the Problem

Toyota is recalling approximately 141,000 Prius and Prius Prime vehicles after discovering that the rear doors can open unexpectedly while driving. The recall affects 2023-2026 Toyota Prius models, 2023-2024 Prius Prime vehicles, and 2025-2026 Prius Plug-In Hybrid models sold in the United States.

Cause of the Problem

The problem is due to a power rear door locking system that can fail if water gets into a door switch, potentially causing a short circuit. Under certain circumstances, the tailgate may unlock if it is not locked. If that happens while driving, the door could open and increase the risk of injury to occupants, especially rear passengers.

Consequences and Solution

Toyota said it confirmed the problem after internal testing and a reported incident abroad. It’s not clear how many vehicles may contain the defective part, but the company was not aware of any injuries or accidents in the United States related to the defect. Toyota dealers will modify the left and right rear door switch circuits to prevent the switch from activating even if it is shorted. The repair is carried out free of charge.

Notification and Repair

Owners of affected vehicles will be notified in late March. Otherwise, owners can visit the official Toyota website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website and enter their vehicle identification number (VIN) or license plate information to check if their vehicle is part of the recall.
