Introduction to Valentino Garavani

Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani has died, his foundation announced Monday. He was 93 years old. Valentino, who is usually known by his first name, died at his home in Rome, according to numerous Italian media reports.

Tribute from the Italian Prime Minister

The Italian Prime Minister was among the first to pay tribute to Italian greatness, writing that Valentino was the "undisputed master of style and elegance and the eternal symbol of Italian haute couture." She added, "Today Italy loses a legend, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations. Thank you for everything."

Life and Career of Valentino

Valentino was born in Italy in 1932 and loved cinema, which led him to the world of fashion. He first made a name for himself in Paris, but then founded the house Valentino with the help of his father and a business partner in 1959 when he returned to Rome.

Signature Shade "Valentino Red"

The signature shade “Valentino Red” became a shade for which he became very famous. He once clarified that he noticed the color in an opera house in Barcelona during a trip to Spain. The venue’s red interiors inspired him, and from then on, the color became his calling card.

Famous Clients

Valentino dressed many famous people over the decades, including actress Elizabeth Taylor, whom he met in Rome in the 1960s. He then moved to New York in the 1970s. Soon his clothes became a staple on red carpets. Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lopez, and Anne Hathaway were among the stars who wore his clothes. Valentino had a close friendship with Anne Hathaway and once described her as “like a daughter” to him.

Legacy

“Few people have devoted more energy to the pursuit of luxury than Valentino,” reads one comment. Along with Giorgio Armani and Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino was among the last great fashion designers who represented the golden age of fashion before the industry became global and highly commercial. “I know what women want,” he once remarked. “They want to be beautiful.”

Funeral and Final Statement

The funeral will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, with a funeral planned for 11 a.m. (1000 GMT) Friday in Rome. Valentino’s foundation said in a statement posted on social media, “Valentino Garavani was not only a constant guide and inspiration for all of us, but also a true source of light, creativity, and vision.” Valentino retired in 2008.
