Introduction to Captiva Landing

A new type of water park is emerging. Florida has established itself as a premier winter vacation destination for frozen Americans with the opening of Captiva Landing. The new water park at South Seas Resort on the Sunshine State’s Gulf Coast debuted on December 22nd last year and offers a warm weather experience in every season.

Features of Captiva Landing

The “winter-ready” water park covers just over 2.5 hectares of the 330-hectare resort grounds and features heated freshwater pools, water slides, sun-drenched play areas, wind-sheltered lounge areas, and dining options. “When we say ‘winterized,’ we mean families can actually leave winter behind as soon as they arrive,” said the general manager. “Captiva Landing was designed so guests can enjoy warm water, sunshine, and outdoor fun without compromise, even in the dead of winter.”

Design and Layout

The water park is located within the resort’s landscape rather than an enclosed space, and it was designed to take inspiration from an island rather than a theme park or anything artificial. “Natural materials, island-inspired architecture, open sightlines, and a relaxed pace all contribute to an experience that feels organic and casual.” This is a notable difference for cold-weather travelers, considering there are only a handful of outdoor water parks that are open year-round—and these are all primarily located in Florida, thanks to the year-round mild climate.

Comparison to Other Water Parks

Aside from the new Captiva Landing, Walt Disney World’s Typhoon Lagoon is typically open year-round and has heated water in the winter. However, it is occasionally closed for maintenance and for short periods of time due to cold weather or storms. When Typhoon Lagoon is closed, it often changes with Disney Blizzard Beach, as a result, Disney World has at least one water park open almost every day of the year.

Captiva Landing’s Unique Features

Captiva Landing is scheduled to be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – and there is no amusement park madness. The water park’s layout includes six sections – Bottlenose Bay, Gulfstream, The Cove, Flippers, The Arcade, and Camp-tiva – all designed to appeal to different generations and tastes. Bottlenose Bay is the anchor of the park with slides, tipping buckets, splash zones, and water cannons, while Gulfstream is a shadier and more relaxing area with a lazy river.

Relaxation and Recreation

Another area for those wanting a more relaxed experience is The Cove, which has a tropical pool and space to relax. “Families don’t all move at the same pace,” “While there are many high-energy moments such as slides, splash zones, and active play, it was equally important to us to create calm, restful spaces like The Cove.” The arcade offers retro games, and Flippers is a casual restaurant serving classics like burgers and soft serve ice cream.

Connection to Nature

Camp-tiva offers nature education and hands-on discovery for children, giving the water park a real connection to the surroundings of the South Seas Nature Reserve. The goal was to create a space that feels cross-generational and timeless, where families can enjoy warm weather and outdoor fun without compromise, even in the dead of winter.
