Honesty in the Workplace

Honesty is the best policy, and this is especially true in the workplace. While some employees may feel guilty about taking a break, others have no problem speaking up and taking time off when they need it.

A New Generation of Employees

Gen Z employees, in particular, seem to have no issue with taking time off for personal reasons. A recent example of this is a vacation request email sent by a young employee to their manager. The email was brief and to the point, stating that the employee had recently gone through a breakup and couldn’t concentrate on work, so they needed a short break.

A Break from the Norm

The email was shared on social media by the manager, who praised the employee’s honesty. The post received over 14 million views and sparked a discussion about the differences between Gen Z employees and their older counterparts. Many people supported the younger generation, saying that they know their rights and aren’t afraid to speak up.

Communication Skills

Some commenters noted that Gen Z employees prioritize honesty and communication in the workplace. One person wrote, "In the age of AI, you should hire people with solid communication skills and great EQ. This is the person." Another commenter said, "I respect honesty. Sometimes a breakup hurts more than deadlines."

A Growing Trend

This isn’t the first time a Gen Z employee has requested time off for an unexpected reason. Another example is an email from a teen who wrote to their boss saying they were feeling overwhelmed and needed a break. Although the manager was initially taken aback, they ultimately approved the request.

A New Approach to Work-Life Balance

These examples highlight a shift in the way younger employees approach work-life balance. They prioritize their mental health and well-being, and aren’t afraid to take time off when they need it. This approach may be unconventional, but it’s gaining support from many people who believe that honesty and communication are essential in the workplace.
