Introduction to the Beaver Moon

The biggest supermoon of the year will be visible in the sky for several days next week. The first full moon in November is known as the Beaver Moon and this year it is also the second of three consecutive supermoons.

What is a Supermoon?

Supermoons are essentially full moons that appear larger and brighter than normal. They arise because the moon does not orbit the Earth in a perfectly circular orbit. The point of the Moon closest to the Earth, which moves in an oval around the planet, is called perigee, and the point furthest from Earth is called apogee. Coincidentally, the Beaver Moon will appear on or near perigee next week – which is why it will appear larger and brighter to us on Earth.

Why is it Called the Beaver Moon?

There is a slight disagreement about the origin of the name Beaver Moon. It could be due to Native Americans setting beaver traps in November, or it could be due to the activity of real beavers building their winter dams.

When is the Best Time to See the Beaver Moon?

The Beaver Supermoon will technically reach its full moon phase at 1:19 p.m. on Wednesday, November 5th. A full moon in the middle of the afternoon may sound strange, but astronomers predict the moon’s phases based on its orbital positions, not its visibility. The Beaver Supermoon will truly come to life for us on Earth as evening falls. It will also be visible for a few nights before the 5th and after.

Weather Conditions

The weather is expected to remain unsettled into next week, with some rainfall predicted to occur across the country. Western areas are likely to be hardest hit, and strong winds are also expected. However, this could lead to above-average temperatures. There could also be short, drier interludes across the country, which could be the best way to see the Beaver Supermoon.

How to Get the Best View of the Beaver Moon

You don’t need a telescope or other special equipment to see the supermoon – your eyes are enough, and binoculars are more than sufficient if you want a closer look. The best way to view the Beaver Moon is to go outside just after sunset and look east. If you’re not sure where east is, look roughly where the sun rises in the morning. If you want to take a photo with a mobile phone, make sure you use night mode, turn off the flash, and try to hold the device still – a tripod would be ideal if you have one.
