Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Powdered Dietary Supplements

Powdered dietary supplements sold at a discount chain’s stores have been linked to at least 11 cases of salmonella in seven states, federal health officials said. The affected product, a super greens powder supplement, has been pulled from shelves due to potential contamination with salmonella bacteria.

Contamination Source and Affected Areas

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a warning regarding the product, which contains moringa leaf powder that may be contaminated with salmonella. The source of the contamination has been traced to a single batch of organic moringa leaf powder imported from India. Illnesses have been reported in Florida, Kansas, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia between May and September.

Symptoms and Risks

People infected with salmonella may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare cases, salmonella can cause more serious ailments, including artery infections and urinary tract problems. Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of serious infections, which can require hospitalization. Three of the people infected with salmonella were hospitalized.

Investigation and Precautions

The CDC has advised consumers to discard or return the affected product, which has not been recalled. The agency may add other products containing moringa leaf powder to the list of contaminated items as the investigation continues. State health officials have collected and tested samples of the product in the homes of sick individuals, and the FDA is investigating the matter further.

What is Moringa?

Moringa is a plant native to India and other countries, valued for its essential nutrients such as proteins, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Its leaves can be dried and powdered, making it a popular ingredient in dietary supplements. However, the potential contamination of moringa leaf powder with salmonella highlights the importance of ensuring the safety and quality of dietary supplements.
