Yorgos Lanthimos Takes a Break from Filmmaking
Yorgos Lanthimos, a five-time Oscar nominee, has announced that he needs a break from filmmaking after releasing his latest film, Bugonia, on October 31st. This decision comes after he has released awards-worthy films starring Emma Stone for the third year in a row.
A Pattern of Back-to-Back Films
Lanthimos has been working non-stop, releasing Poor things in 2023 and Types of kindness in 2024, both of which starred Emma Stone. He has admitted that he needs "a little break" and has stated that he cannot keep up this pace. In an interview with Collider, he said, "I think I need a break. I’ve said that before between the other three, but now I mean it. You can hold me to that. I’ll take a little break."
Recent Success
Lanthimos’ recent films have been highly successful, with Poor things earning him Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, and Emma Stone winning Best Actress. The duo also worked together on Types of kindness while Lanthimos was completing post-production on Poor things.
The Reason Behind the Break
Lanthimos explained that he often starts working on a new project as soon as he finishes a script. He said, "Every time a script is finished, I decide what film I want to make, so when it’s finished and we’ve been working on something for so long, it’s just a shame to just leave it and wait." He also mentioned that he worked on Types of kindness during the long period of VFX for Poor things, and then moved on to Bugonia, which he had been working on for three years.
The Latest Film
In Bugonia, two conspiracy theorists, played by Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis, kidnap a powerful CEO, played by Emma Stone, who they believe is an alien intent on destroying the Earth. The film is currently playing in select theaters. Lanthimos has stated that he is exhausted and needs to take a break, saying, "So you find the will and the strength, but at some point it runs out. We’re at this point."
