Introduction to Breast Cancer Awareness

A cancer doctor in Allentown, Pennsylvania is celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing a different type of pink for each of the 31 days in October. This is more than just a fashion statement, as the color pink is associated with breast cancer because it symbolizes femininity, caring and solidarity.

The Inspiration Behind the Pink Shoes

Dr. Lori Alfonse of the Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute has a collection of stylish pink shoes. She says, "Each shoe has its own personality, its own shade, its own fabric, and these are personality traits that are very similar to my patients." In honor of her patients, the surgical oncologist wears a different pair of pink shoes every day during October.

A Serious Message Behind the Pink Passion

Initially, Dr. Alfonse only had enough shoes for the 31 days in October, but now she has well over 72 pairs of pink shoes, allowing her to wear more than one in a day. Her pink passion has a serious side, a message of strength and survival. "Breast cancer is not a death sentence. They are two words that represent many different types of cancer that are as individual as our personalities," she said. "We’ve gotten very, very good at treating breast cancer. We still have a lot of work to do. But the vast majority of our treatments are tolerable. They’re successful."

A Personal Connection to the Cause

Dr. Alfonse wore a bright pink boot while visiting patients, always reminding them of the importance of mammograms for early detection. She says patients look forward to her pink shoe show; it’s a special connection she has with them. Dr. Alfonse also has a personal connection to the cause, as her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother all had breast cancer.

Raising Awareness and Hope

Dr. Alfonse’s efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer are not only about wearing pink shoes but also about reminding people of the importance of early detection and treatment. Her message of strength and survival is one that resonates with her patients and inspires hope in those affected by the disease.
