Bosideng Appoints Kim Jones as Creative Director of Areal Sub-Brand

In a surprising but strategic move, Kim Jones has been appointed creative director of Bosideng’s newly launched Areal sub-brand. This marks a bold step for China’s largest jacket manufacturer as it seeks to strengthen its quality in the urban luxury sector.

Background of the Partnership

The partnership dates back to last year, when Bosideng invited Jones to Shanghai, giving birth to the Areal concept. Jones expressed his interest in working with a brand that people wouldn’t expect, to create things that people can wear, afford, and love. Areal is positioned as a high-end urban line and emphasizes multifunctional layers and versatile city clothing.

Kim Jones’ Career and Expertise

A graduate of Central Saint Martins, Jones is known for his transformative stints at Dunhill, Louis Vuitton Men’s, and Dior Men’s, as well as leading Fendi womenswear and couture. His move from European houses to a Chinese powerhouse underlines Bosideng’s ambition to compete on the global stage.

Bosideng’s Ambition and Expansion

The timing of Jones’ appointment is strategic, as Bosideng has been aggressively pursuing international expansion since 2012. The company has reopened its flagship in London, opened over 350 high-end stores in Italy, and regularly presents at fashion weeks in Paris, Milan, and New York. Collaborations with designers and endorsements from celebrities have increased awareness in Western markets.

Financial Performance and Growth

Financially, Bosideng’s development continues to be strong, with revenue of RMB 25.9 billion (US$3.6 billion) for fiscal 2025, up 11.6 percent year-on-year. Profit attributable to shareholders rose 14.3 percent to RMB 3.51 billion (US$492.5 million). Analysts note that despite being the third-largest brand in China by retail value, Bosideng controls about 2 percent of the fragmented outerwear market, leaving plenty of room for growth.

Conclusion and Future Prospects

Jones’ appointment underscores a broader trend among Chinese brands to enlist global design talent to reinvent their image and combine national strength with international appeal. Areal represents both a design experiment and a calculated push to define the next era of urban luxury outerwear. With Jones at the helm, Bosideng is poised to consolidate its positioning in high-quality, multi-functional urban fashion and drive growth in the global market.
