Amazon Cloud Computing Service Outage

Introduction to the Outage

Amazon’s cloud computing service experienced a severe outage on Monday, affecting online activity worldwide. The service provides remote computing services to numerous apps, websites, governments, universities, and companies. According to a website that tracks online outages, users reported problems with various services, including Amazon Alexa, Amazon Prime, Snapchat, Ring, Roblox, Fortnite, online broker Robinhood, and the McDonald’s app.

Impact of the Outage

Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported that services were disrupted in the eastern region of the U.S. and engineers were working to understand the cause of the problem. The outage had a significant impact on many websites and apps, with over half of the reported issues occurring around 6:15 a.m. EDT.

Recovery Efforts

At 5:27 a.m. EDT, AWS began reporting progress, saying, "We are seeing clear signs of recovery." Just over half an hour later, it said: "We continue to see a recovery in most" of the affected services. By 6:35 a.m. EDT, AWS said "the underlying DNS issue has been fully resolved and most AWS service operations are now functioning normally," but noted that some requests may be slowed "as we work toward a complete resolution."

Resolution and Aftermath

Shortly before 7 a.m. EDT, the AWS page indicated that there were "no current issues." However, at 7:08 a.m. EDT, AWS said it was "continuing to work to fully restore" various services. The outage highlights the reliance of many companies and organizations on cloud computing services like AWS.

Expert Insights

According to Patrick Burgess, a cybersecurity expert, "much of the world now relies on these three or four big (cloud) computing companies to provide the underlying infrastructure, so an issue like this can have a big impact on a wide range of online services." Burgess noted that "the world now runs on the cloud" and the internet is viewed as a utility like water or electricity, making it difficult for users to pinpoint exactly what’s happening when something goes wrong.
