The Importance of Washing Rice

Introduction to Rice Washing

Washing rice is a simple yet effective trick to achieve fluffy, perfectly cooked grains. The reason behind this is the excess starch that rice naturally contains, which can be easily washed off with water.

The Problem with Excess Starch

During transportation, rice grains rub against each other, releasing additional starch. If this starch is not removed, cooking the rice will result in sticky, soggy, and lumpy grains, which is undesirable.

Debunking Common Misconceptions

Some individuals believe that washing rice is primarily done to remove dust or stones. Although this was once a valid concern, modern production techniques have made it almost obsolete. The main reason for washing rice is to remove excess starch, resulting in fluffier cooked rice.
