Government Shutdown and CDC Layoffs

A fired scientist from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expressed concern about the impact of troop reductions during the government shutdown. The scientist, who wishes to remain anonymous due to fear of retaliation, stated that "ordinary Americans should be very concerned" about the layoffs.

Impact on Public Health

The scientist emphasized that the layoffs will result in more deaths and preventable deaths. "It will mean more deaths and more preventable deaths," she said. "People are absolutely going to die as a result of the effects of this government." The scientist worked at the CDC for over a decade, studying chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Government Shutdown and Layoffs

The Trump administration has taken advantage of the government shutdown to lay off over 4,000 federal workers, with plans to go further. Russell Vought, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, stated that the number of layoffs could exceed 10,000. The CDC has already informed around 600 employees of their layoffs, although a federal judge has issued an oral order to temporarily halt all layoffs by the government.

Affected CDC Programs

The layoffs at the CDC include all staff at the CDC offices in Washington, D.C., all staff in the Office of the Director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and all policy and communications staff at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. However, the judge’s ruling has put the layoffs of these employees on hold, leaving them in limbo while the case is heard.

Controversy Surrounding the CDC

The CDC has been subjected to significant changes since Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took charge of the Department of Health and Human Services. Kennedy, a vaccine skeptic, has replaced all 17 members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and has been accused of pressuring CDC officials to approve his vaccination policies. Several senior CDC officials have resigned in protest, including former CDC director Susan Monarez.

Response to Disease Outbreaks

The scientist who spoke to CBS News emphasized that the turmoil within the CDC would impact responses to disease outbreaks, such as the recent measles outbreak in South Carolina. "These cuts will significantly impact CDC’s capacity to scale up," the scientist said. "It will impact our ability to respond to public health outbreaks just as all of these threats are increasing." The layoffs at the CDC have already resulted in the loss of around 3,000 employees, nearly a quarter of its staff.
