Passing of a Music Legend

Acclaimed R&B and soul singer D’Angelo has died aged 51 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, US media reported on Tuesday. “The shining star of our family has dimmed its light for us in this life,” his family said in a statement, in which he mentioned his “persistent and courageous fight against cancer.”

D’Angelo’s Music Career

Born Michael Eugene Archer in Virginia, D’Angelo has carved out a place for himself in the R&B and soul genres with his gravelly, smooth voice and obvious talent. Although he occasionally featured in his musical productions, his music was adored by fans and critics.

Rise to Fame

He received enormous praise for his debut CD “Brown Sugar” released in 1995 and his album “Voodoo” released in 2000. He then won the Grammys for Best R&B Album and Best Male R&B Performance for his song “Untitled.” [How Does It Feel]”, which almost overshadowed his album. He shot the video shirtless and sent his fans into a frenzy.

Personal Life

D’Angelo was a partner of R&B singer Angie Stone in the 1990s, with whom he also produced many songs. They had a son together, the artist Swayvo Twain, born Michael Archer Jr. Stone described him as her “musical soulmate” and called their working relationship “like milk and cereal.” D’Angelo also has a daughter, Imani Archer.
