Introduction to the Nordic Film Days Lübeck

The Nordic Film Days Lübeck is one of the oldest international film events, founded in 1956. It is dedicated to films from Scandinavia and the Baltics as well as from the Schleswig-Holstein region in northern Germany. This festival has a unique way of combining film quality with socially relevant topics, making it a standout event in the film industry.

New Artistic Director

Hanna Reifgerst will take over the artistic direction of the Nordic Film Days Lübeck from January 1, 2026. She will replace Thomas Haller, who has held the position since 2021 and will leave the role at the end of March. Reifgerst was selected by a committee consisting of Lübeck’s Senator for Culture Monika Frank, the managing director of the Nordic Film Days, Susanne Kasimir, and the Berlinale’s chief of staff, Florian Weghorn.

About Hanna Reifgerst

Reifgerst has been working in the film industry for 15 years, with experience in script development, film funding, event design, and festivals. Since 2022, she has been curating the Young Audiences section of the Nordic Film Days and oversees the “Film for All” initiative, which aims to improve accessibility in cinemas. She was also appointed Future Leader by Screen in May 2024.

Vision for the Festival

Reifgerst sees her task as maintaining the festival’s curatorial line while continuing to develop the festival. She wants the Nordic Film Days Lübeck to be a space where new voices and perspectives become visible, catering to a diverse audience across all generations. She believes that the festival should be a place of cinematic excellence and public dialogue.

Outgoing Artistic Director

Thomas Haller will oversee the 67th edition of the festival, which will take place from November 5th to 9th. According to Monika Frank, Haller’s commitment, sensitivity, and distinctive profile have advanced the Nordic Film Days Lübeck. Frank also expressed her confidence in Reifgerst, stating that she knows the festival, the team, and the audience, and will bring new impulses for further development.

The Future of the Festival

With Reifgerst at the helm, the Nordic Film Days Lübeck is expected to continue its tradition of showcasing high-quality films while promoting social relevance and accessibility. As the festival moves forward, it will be exciting to see how Reifgerst’s vision and experience shape its future. The festival’s commitment to showcasing new voices and perspectives will undoubtedly make it a must-attend event for film enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
