Public Health Care in Morocco

Introduction to the Crisis

Better public health care is a central demand of the protest movement that has been active in Morocco since mid-September. The Moroccan state’s public hospitals have become a symbol for Moroccans frustrated by the decline in government services.

The State of Public Hospitals

The public hospitals in Morocco are plagued by a lack of medical care, corruption, and absenteeism. These issues have led to widespread dissatisfaction among the population, particularly among the younger generation.

Experience of Doctors

Our team spoke to two doctors who work in the public hospital system. They described the challenges they face on a daily basis, including a lack of resources, outdated equipment, and a shortage of staff. Despite their best efforts, they are often unable to provide the level of care that their patients deserve.

Experience of Patients

We also spoke to a patient who has been using the public hospital system. The patient described the long wait times, the lack of attention from medical staff, and the overall sense of neglect that they feel. The patient’s experience is not unique, and many Moroccans have similar stories to tell.

Demand for Change

The protest movement is demanding better public health care, including more resources, improved equipment, and an end to corruption and absenteeism. The movement is also calling for greater accountability and transparency within the public hospital system.

A Call to Action

The demand for better public health care is a call to action for the Moroccan government. The government must take concrete steps to address the issues plaguing the public hospital system and provide its citizens with the level of care that they deserve. Only then can the country begin to address the underlying issues that are driving the protest movement.
