Introduction to a New Horror Film
Thai filmmaker Banjong Pisanthanakun, known for his box-office hit The Medium, has teamed up with South Korean producers to create a new psychological horror film. The project is a collaboration between Korea and Thailand, with Lewis Taewan Kim producing through his banner Lewis Pictures in Seoul. Solaire Partners, a subsidiary of K Wave Media, is one of the financiers, while Thailand’s GDH 559 is a co-production partner.
The Storyline
The story revolves around a married Korean man who travels to Thailand on a business trip and falls in love with a mysterious Thai woman. However, their encounter leads to an unimaginable nightmare. The film takes a contemporary approach to Nang Tani, a female Thai spirit that is said to haunt wild banana trees. The story features characters from both Korea and Thailand.
The Inspiration Behind the Film
Banjong has been wanting to adapt the legend of Nang Tani for a long time but couldn’t find the right angle until he imagined a Korean character in the story. This shift in perspective allowed him to reinterpret the folklore in a new and unique way. Banjong is working with a team of Korean and Thai writers on the project, which is currently in the script phase.
Previous Collaborations and Success
Banjong’s previous horror film, The Medium, was produced by GDH and South Korean filmmaker NA Hong-Jin, and it achieved considerable success in Korea and across Asia in 2021. This new film marks his second collaboration with the territory. Korea’s Kim has previously produced films such as Jason Yu’s Sleep and Hong Eui-Jeong’s Voice of Silence, both of which were supported by Solaire Partners, as well as Bong Joon Ho’s Okja.
The Future of the Film
With a talented team of writers and producers from both Korea and Thailand, this new horror film is expected to be a thrilling and unique take on the legend of Nang Tani. As the project continues to develop, fans of psychological horror and Asian folklore can look forward to a chilling and unforgettable cinematic experience.
