IT Problems in Southern Health Trust
The Southern Health Trust has experienced "essential" IT problems, resulting in the cancellation of most planned operations and outpatient hospital appointments on Thursday. Despite the issues being resolved, the trust continues to investigate the cause of the failure, which is not related to cyber problems.
Cancellations and Postponements
The trust has announced that planned operations and outpatient hospital dates will be postponed as soon as possible. However, acute services will be affected, with outpatient and planned operations being canceled. People are being asked not to attend non-essential appointments, but patient visits are still possible.
Patient Experiences
One patient, Elaine Agnew, was "devastated" that her operation, which she had been waiting for almost a year, was canceled. Another patient, Nicola Burns, brought her son to Daisy Hill Hospital for a scheduled appointment, only to find it had been canceled. Gerard Lennon was also affected, being told he could not leave the hospital until his blood test results were available, which were delayed due to the IT problems.
Impact on Waiting Lists
Dr. Clodagh Corrigan, deputy chair of the Northern Irish Council of the British Medical Association, stated that the events will inevitably impact waiting lists and highlight the need for investment. She praised employees for trying their best to ensure safe and effective care under difficult circumstances.
Political Response
Politicians have expressed concerns over the IT problems, with Sinn Féin MLA Linda Dillon urging locals to monitor social media for updates. Diane Dodds from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) stated that the problem has put additional pressure on the entire health service, and emphasized the need to identify and resolve the issue quickly. SDLP MLA Justin McNulty expressed concern and distress for the large number of patients affected, while Eóin Tennyson, deputy leader of the Alliance Party, called for assurance that everything possible is being done to restore systems and prevent similar mistakes in the future.
Affected Locations
The IT problems affect various locations within the Southern Health Trust, including Craigavon Area Hospital, Daisy Hill Hospital, and other care centers in counties Tyrone, Armagh, and Down. The trust has assured that non-urgent services and mental health services will operate as normal, but acute services will be impacted.
