Introduction to the West Midlands IP Fund
The West Midlands IP Fund is a financing opportunity for local creative companies in the West Midlands to bring their ideas to life. The latest round of the fund will be opened later this month, offering grants of up to £20,000. This fund has already supported various projects, including the revival of the popular children’s show Bagpuss and the new BBC drama The Friseur Mysteries, both of which were shot in the region.
Success Stories of the Fund
Five TV series and three feature films were commissioned after being developed by production companies in the region with the support of the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), Create Central, and Creative UK. The regional mayor, Richard Parker, stated that the fund helps to unlock the potential of local creative people to get their ideas off the storyboard and into production in the West Midlands. He believes that these opportunities create jobs and attract investments to the region.
Impact on the Local Film Industry
The mayor recently signed an agreement with the BBC to double production in the region to £40 million per year, which will create more jobs and training options for the screen industry. Local filmmakers, such as Ché from Wolverhampton and Anton from Birmingham, who lead recognized content, are examples of the impact of the fund. Their BBC Three documentary, Queen of Trucks, followed Shannan Paterson, who headed an HGV driving school in Willenhall. The project helped them secure further commissions, including a Channel 4 game show, Facing the Family.
Benefits of the Fund for Local Filmmakers
Ché emphasized the importance of getting the chance to develop Queen of Trucks, stating that it was their first commission and brought them into the room with commissioners. Now, they are working with several channels. Ed Shedd, Chairman of Create Central, said that the next phase of the fund would offer regional production companies more opportunities to develop original ideas. Paul Ashton, head of film & TV at Creative UK, added that development financing is crucial for regional screen companies to convert ideas into successful projects.
Opportunities for Local Creative Companies
The West Midlands IP Fund provides a unique opportunity for local creative companies to bring their ideas to reality. With the support of the WMCA, Create Central, and Creative UK, these companies can develop their projects and secure commissions. The fund has already shown success in supporting local filmmakers and production companies, and it is expected to continue to do so in the future. As the regional mayor stated, the fund helps to unlock the potential of local creative people, creating jobs and attracting investments to the region.
